Titanium is a metallic chemical element, chemical symbol Ti, atomic
number 22, in the periodic table of chemical elements in the fourth
period, IVB group. It is a silver-white transition metal
characterized by light weight, high strength, metallic luster and
resistance to wet chlorine corrosion. But titanium can not be
applied to dry chlorine gas, even if the temperature of dry
chlorine gas below 0℃, there will be a violent chemical reaction to
generate titanium tetrachloride, and then decomposition to generate
titanium dichloride, or even combustion. Titanium remains reliable
in chlorine only when the water content is above 0.5%.
Titanium is considered a rare metal because it is dispersed in
nature and difficult to extract. But it is relatively abundant,
ranking tenth among all elements. Titanium ore mainly ilmenite and
rutile, widely distributed in the earth's crust and lithosphere.
Titanium is also present in almost all organisms, rocks, water
bodies and soil. The extraction of titanium from the main ore
requires the Croll or Hunter process. The most common compound for
titanium is titanium dioxide, which can be used to make white
pigments. Other compounds include titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4),
used as a catalyst and as a smokcreen for air cover, and titanium
trichloride (TiCl3), used to catalyze the production of
polypropylene. Titanium is a very active metal with low equilibrium
potential and high thermodynamic corrosion tendency in media. But
in fact titanium in many media is very stable, such as titanium in
oxidation, neutral and weak reducing media is corrosion resistant.
Titanium is a non-magnetic metal and will not be magnetized in a
large magnetic field. It is non-toxic and has a good compatibility
with human tissues and blood, so it is used in the medical field.
Compared with steel and copper, titanium has the longest vibration
attenuation time when subjected to mechanical and electrical
vibration. The performance of titanium can be used as tuning fork,
vibration element of medical ultrasonic crusher and vibration film
of advanced loudspeaker. This performance of titanium shows that
its yield strength ratio (tensile strength/yield strength) is high,
indicating that the plastic deformation of metallic titanium
material is poor during forming. As the ratio of yield limit to
elastic modulus of titanium is large, the resilience of titanium is
large.
