Compared with 316L, 904L stainless steel wire has a lower carbon content of up to 0.02%, preventing intergranular corrosion during welding, and higher molybdenum has excellent resistance to chloride attack (pitting and crevice corrosion). In particular, it is added with copper to provide useful corrosion resistance to all concentrations of sulfuric acid.
904L stainless steel wire cloth which dictate its use are:
Superaustenitic stainless steel.
Non-magnetic in all conditions.
Withstands outdoor exposure without rusting.
Good fatigue strength & excellent corrosion resistance in severe
industrial and chemical settings.
Good resistance to inorganic acids (i.e. hot phosphoric acid) as
well as most organic acids.
Lower resistance to nitric acid vs. T-304L (which is free of
molybdenum).
Best used in temperatures below 750°F (undergoes embrittlement at
higher temperatures).
Easily welded, more difficult to cut and form than T-316L (thus,
higher cutting forces are required).
Excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of acidic & alkaline
environments
