4340 steel is a medium carbon, low alloy steel known for its toughness and strength. AISI 4340 is also a nickel chromium molybdenum steel. In the tensile range of 930-1080MPa, 4340 alloy steel and temper are usually supplied. Pre-hardened and tempered 4340 steel can be further case hardened by flame or induction hardening and nitriding. 4340 steel has good impact and impact resistance as well as wear and abrasion resistance in the hardened condition. AISI 4340 steel properties provide good ductility in the annealed condition, allowing it to be bent or formed. Our 4340 alloy steel can also be melted and resistance welded, other alloy steels are not hardenable to provide the required strength. It's an excellent choice for highly stressful sections.
CNC machining is best done with 4340 alloy steel in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. It can be easily machined by all conventional methods such as sawing, turning, drilling etc. However, under high strength conditions of 200ksi and above, its machinability is only 25% to 10% of that under annealed conditions.
AISI 4340 steel is used in most industrial sectors for applications requiring higher tensile/yield strength than 4140 steel. Some typical applications such as:
CNC machining has grown to become one of the most critical manufacturing processes used on workshops around the world. Adding computer control to a previously manual process allowed a leap forward in the accuracy and precision of machined parts. Furthermore, due to the increasingly complex requirements of various industries, CNC machine tools have undergone several evolutions to better meet the needs of customers. The evolution of CNC machining technology has given rise to various forms and variations of the technology. These include 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machines. As a leading provider of CNC machining services, we often receive questions from our customers about how these machines work. This article will focus on the working principles, advantages and applications of 4-axis CNC machining.
4-axis CNC machining offers a significant upgrade over 3-axis
machining. It adds an additional degree of freedom through
rotational motion, making machining complex features possible and
more straightforward.
In 4-axis CNC machining, the tool moves freely on the X, Y, and Z
axes to machine the workpiece. However, the workpiece is not
stationary on the table like in 3-axis machining.
A 4-axis CNC machine can rotate a workpiece around the X-axis in a
plane called the A-axis. So as the tool moves along the workpiece
and the table turns it, you can cut along the contour of the
workpiece.
Higher design complexity can be achieved. Because the table rotates around the X-axis, 4-axis CNC machines can produce intricately detailed parts. Additionally, the extra rotation makes it possible to access and machine parts on other faces at odd angles to create the final part. High precision and accuracy. 4-axis CNC machines can access multiple faces of a workpiece without adjusting or changing fixtures. As a result, parts made from it are highly accurate and meet strict standards. Higher speed and lower production cost. Most jobs done on a 4-axis CNC machine require only one setup. As a result, work can proceed smoothly without downtime or intervention to change fixtures and tools.
