2. Nickel-cadmium battery

Nickel-cadmium batteries are alkaline batteries that use metal cadmium as the negative active material and nickel hydroxide as the positive active material. An aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide was used as the electrolyte solution.

Nickel-cadmium batteries are maintenance-free and have been used in automobile starting power supplies.

Nickel-cadmium batteries also have the characteristics of wide temperature range, long cycle and service life, not easy to damage and electrolyte leakage, but limited by the memory effect, they cannot be fully discharged deeply or over-discharged. The most fatal shortcoming of nickel-cadmium batteries is that they are If it is not handled properly during the discharge process, there will be a serious "memory effect", which will greatly shorten the service life.

The so-called "memory effect" means that before the battery is charged, the power of the battery is not completely exhausted, which will cause a decrease in battery capacity over time. During the process of charging and discharging the battery (the discharge is more obvious), some These small bubbles accumulate over time, reducing the area of the battery plate and indirectly affecting the capacity of the battery.

Therefore, such batteries are not efficient. At the same time, cadmium and cadmium compounds are toxic and seriously pollute the environment, so this type of battery is gradually being replaced by nickel-metal hydride batteries.
